WHERE
On the Mediterranean, alongside existing coastal cities.
FOR WHOM
The project does not discriminate against any demographic. Locals, migrants and climate refugees: they are all welcome.
WHAT FOR
The project aims to create more healthful and humane living environments, while addressing the critical processes of coastal overpopulation and resources depletion, by halting and eventually reversing over-land urban sprawl and directing it across the sea. The expanding floating communities will incorporate technologies and design principles aimed at providing energy, food self-sufficiency, and socio-economic sustainability, while countering such issues as overfishing and habitat destruction, by regenerating and creating new marine habitats. Although interdependent with the parent land communities, they develop into protected markets and competitive production hubs.
HOW & FOR HOW LONG
The building blocks of the new city on the sea are its autonomous Islet units. These floating subentities come into existence one at a time and are custom sized to house any number of citizens that may wish to make their home in a carefully designed, floating neighborhood. And although they may all be state of the art accommodations, the way in which the Islets are structured (by providing expansive business and mixed zoning) will make the apartments highly competitive and not luxury real estate. The floating Islets are permanent structures. This project looks into the details of such a structure.
